The Nokia C12 is Quietly Unveiled with Android 12 (Go Edition): Unimpressive Tech and Features, But a Strategic Move by HMD
When it comes to smartphones, Nokia isn’t as front and center in people’s minds as it used to be. But HMD Global, the company behind Nokia phones, is trying to change that. They’re focusing on the entry-level to lower-midrange segments of the market and it looks like they’re starting to make some progress. In 2022, they’re focusing mainly on the budget market and it seems to be working.
If you’re looking for a fancy flagship phone from Nokia, you might want to lower your expectations as HMD Global is more about budget-friendly phones these days. But, the good news is that you won’t have to break the bank to get your hands on a Nokia phone, and it might just take you on a trip down memory lane to the days when Nokia was the top dog in the mobile phone market.
So it’s not exactly a shocker, but HMD Global, the company behind Nokia phones, just announced a phone like the Nokia C12 for the start of 2023 – it’s a pretty basic Android 12 Go Edition phone. It is also a pretty good indication of what we can expect from Nokia this year. It might not be the most exciting phone, but as long as it sells well and brings in some profit, that is all that matters, I guess.
The Nokia C12 is nothing to get excited about, it’s just your standard run-of-the-mill budget smartphone with a 6.3-inch LCD display with HD+ resolution. It runs on a Unisoc (formerly known as Spreadtrum) 9863A1 chip, which is made for budget phones. Don’t expect to play the latest games and with only 2GB of RAM, it’s not exactly a multitasking machine either – but it’s good enough for basic tasks.
The old Nokia phones definitely got a rep for being tough as nails. And it looks like the Nokia C12 is trying to live up to that with its polycarbonate back and some kind of toughened glass display. It definitely gives the phone a rugged, solidly-built kind of vibe.
Is there something special about the Nokia C12 that makes it stand out?
Nokia C12 doesn’t have any groundbreaking new features, but it’s got some tricks up its sleeve. It’s got an IP52 rating for water resistance. That means you can’t go swimming with it, but it can handle a little bit of water like a splash or a spray.
Nokia C12’s camera (5MP front and 8MP main) got some pretty nifty tricks that’ll help you take decent photos. It’s nothing fancy but it’s got some handy features that’ll help you take decent photos. Night mode, Portrait mode, Auto HDR, Time-lapse, all that good stuff. They’re handy, and they’ll help you take good enough pictures for such an entry-level phone.
The C12 has an all-day battery life, that’s according to Nokia, but with just a 3000 mAh battery, it’s a bit suspect. However, whether or not it actually lasts all day depends on usage habits.
The Nokia C12: No Need to Ditch Your Favorite Headphones
The Nokia C12 still has a headphone jack, and that’s pretty convenient. Not all phones have them these days, so you don’t have to worry about buying new dongles or upgrading to wireless headphones. You can keep using that trusty pair of headphones with the 3.5mm jack that you just can’t let go of.
However, the Nokia C12 still uses a Micro USB connection, which is a bit outdated and many other brands have already ditched it in favor of the newer USB-C standard. Let’s be real, Micro USB is on the way out, it is becoming increasingly rare. It’s not exactly future-proof, so it’s something to keep in mind.
The Nokia C12 is on its way and while it may have pretty solid specs for a budget device, it’s probably not worth the price tag HMD Global is putting on it. Let’s be real, you can probably find similar specs for a better price from other OEMs. It’s only coming in one configuration with 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage which is not bad, but you can definitely find better for the same price. It’s going to be available first in Germany and Austria, but don’t worry if you’re not in those countries, it’ll probably expand to other markets soon. Plus, it’s coming in three different colours; Dark Cyan, Charcoal, and Light Mint. And it’s priced at around $128 in the US, around 7,000 Pesos in the Philippines and Rs. 10,470 in India.
