Samsung Galaxy A8 and A8+ are official: Midrange devices with infinity display
Samsung introduced a new upper midrange devices with infinity display to add to its growing portfolio of phones with tall aspect ratio. This is going to be a refresh of their 2017’s A5 and A7, which abandoned its previous naming convention for a more coherent model identification.
First off, the screen keep up with the times with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9 for both the A8 (5.6″ display) and the larger A8+ (6″ display). They come with minimal bezels and curved glass panel but unlike the more expensive flagship such as the S8, there is no edge to edge curve screen here. Just like its predecessor, Super AMOLED panel is going to be utilized for the screen. Though the resolution is going to be ‘only’ in Full HD, 1080p, it won’t be as power hungry, which is the feather in the cap of A5 and A7 (2017) — above average stamina.
In terms of photography, taking selfie with blur background is possible with dual 16MP+8MP with f1.9 apperture. Live Focus features allows you to apply bokeh effect before and even after you take your selfie picture. Meanwhile, the main/rear shooter has larger sensor than its predecessor as both variant have 16MP sensor and f/1.7 aperture. Unfortunately, Samsung decided to hold back to make it a competitive low-light shooter by not implementing optical image stabilization. In consolation, there is a digital stabilization instead for more smoother video footage.
Water resistance (IP68 water and dust rating), fast USB charging via USB-C are something that is expected for this offering. The smaller A8 is going to have 4GB of RAM while the larger A8+ has option of either 4 or 6GB of RAM. In terms of storage both have 32GB and 64GB variants. The A8 and A8+ comes with 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh batteries respectively and with less power hungry features, should be sufficient for average daily use.
Out-of-the box, the devices will have Android 7.1 Nougat as its OS but definitely it is not far fetched to see it upgraded to 8.0 Oreo down the road. Consumer can purchase this devices on January 2018 with prices to be announced later.
