Samsung Galaxy A8+ 2018 vs Samsung Galaxy A7 2017- A spec comparison
Samsung just recently took the wraps off their Galaxy A8 (2018) and its larger sibling, the A8+ (2018). The two devices are poised to take over the current A5 (2017) and A7 (2017) line up as company’s upper midrange offering with near flagship specs in 2018.
Here we will compare and take a look at the notable differences of the bigger A8+ (2018) and it’s predecessor, the A7 (2017) apart from the change in naming scheme.
Display and Aspect Ratio
The most notable difference between two mid-rangers that set them apart in terms of aesthetics is A8 Plus’ tall aspect ratio. Given, it looks like every other phone these days, you can say that the A8+ has a modern display with 18.5:9 aspect ratio. When it comes to screen size, the A7 (2017) may look wider but it has actually a smaller 5.7 inch display. On the other hand, the A8+ has a 6.0 inch display in-spite of having a narrower frame– and in fact has more screen real estate of the two.
Unsurprisingly, both of the devices employs Super AMOLED display with vibrant and well-saturated colors. Though it is not a 4K resolution, a 1080p display is still acceptable but the newer A8+ has the edge in pixel density (411 ppi) compared to A7 2017 (386 ppi) which is going to be much sharper on the former.
Cameras
The A8+ is arguably a superior camera compared to the A7 2017 on paper at least. The latest device has a dual camera on the front which is capable of creating a ‘Bokeh’ effect and can be adjusted before or after taking a self-portrait. The main camera has retained the 16MP resolution of its predecessor but the sensor is much bigger and more capable in low-light for the A8+ (f/1.7 aperture) than the A7 2017’s f/1.9 aperture. Still, there is no optical image stabilization but digital stabilization takes care of shaky footage for the A8+.
Processor
The A7 2017 and the A8+ both uses in-house Exynos CPU to do the heavy lifting. The latest A series of course has the advantage of newer and faster 7885 Exynos with Octa-core 2×2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 compared to the A7 2017 which utilized a 7880 Exynos with a lower Octa-core 1.9 GHz Cortex-A53.
Storage and RAM
There are two variants for the upcoming A8+ which is available (territory dependent) in 64GB internal storage / 6GB RAM or 32 GB internal storage / 4 GB of RAM. Either way, it should be better than the set up for A7 2017 which only comes with 32 GB storage and 3 GB RAM.
Fingerprint Sensor
Another difference between the A8+ and A7 2017 is the location of fingerprint scanner. Since the design of the A8+ has a minimal bezel, there is no room for physical button and there is no choice at this time but to move it at the rear. You can argue that having the sensor on the front is more convenient, but at least the rear scanner of the A8+ is has a better placement than its contemporary flaships, the S8 and S8+ that invites camera smudges every time you unlock the device.
Battery
The A7 2017 is known for its above average stamina and has a capacity of 3600 mAh. This time around, the A8+ comes with a slightly lower 3500 mAh but the more power efficient processor should make up for tad smaller capacity.
Price
Hands down, the A8+ take the cake as the more capable devices. But the hefty asking price for the latest A series is going to be a setback for those who think it is going to be in line with the A 2017 series in pricing. In Europe at least the A8+ is going to cost €599 whereas the A7 2017, which is still a capable device is going to have a more attractive discounted price at this point in time.
