With Nokia 7.1, premium mid-range is all the rage
A certain fruity company normalize the notion that you have to pay for a grand to get a flagship device. On the contrary, the resurgent Nokia, under HMD is doing a bang-up job of introducing mid-rangers that has almost flagship specs without the corresponding high price tag. Hot on the heels of its critically well received Nokia 7 Plus, is another near flagship offering is generating buzz for techies who appreciates value devices. We are talking about the svelte Nokia 7.1 which is headed to the US market this October.
The Nokia 7.1 is built like a jewel (that you can afford)
Glass finish for the front and rear on the Nokia 7.1 is nothing new in this price segment. But what makes it stands-out is the attention to detail that gives it a more premium flagship look and feel. The anodized frame has a chamfered edges that gives it a two tone appearance such as a gray/copper and blue/silver, which are the color combination of the two variants of the phones.
HDR on a mid-range is a first
Bringing something new to the table is HDR 10 that is usually found on a flagship device. It can also enhance standard videos converting it to HDR which should improve overall visuals. The resolution is Full HD with PureView display that can get bright enough to be legible in direct sunlight.
Nokia and Android One: a match made in smartphone heaven
Another strength of the Nokia phones is they adapt Android One in almost all of their new offering. Instead of insisting on a heavily, bloat-fest customized ROM, they go for the more streamlined route in Android One. With that, Nokia deserves a good round of applause for not making its customers wait for eternity if at all to roll out timely security and software updates because Android One is guaranteed at least two year of Google TLC. The Android One on Nokia 7.1 is just another reason why the device too good to pass if you are looking for a phone in the price segment.
Enhanced Bothie
Although taking front and rear pictures simultaneously is not really new, Nokia made an enhancement for the 7.1. You can now adjust the size of the frame of either front or back viewfinder instead of dividing it in the middle. There is also AI smarts for the front camera for facial recognition. Nokia is still partnering with ZEISS Optics to utilize its camera lens expertise.
Price and Availability
The most crucial aspect of this souped-up mid-range is its pricing in order to entice estranged Nokia fan back into the fold. Nokia 7.1 will be available in the US for pre-order on October 5 and will arrive on October 28. The price is a sweet spot, which is going to be at $349 for 64GB storage / 4 GB RAM configuration.
