Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are officially unveiled
Even before the official unveiling of the Google Pixel 3 phones, the design was already an open secret to many since it was already preempted by leaks and even early hands-on experience. Google didn’t go for the specs game or chase the later hardware but instead focuses on AI smarts and machine learning to deliver a compelling device.
Both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are mostly identical except of course, for the display size and battery capacity. The bigger XL has an OLED display with screen size of 6.3-inch with 1,440 x 2,960px resolution or equivalent to 532ppi. The most controversial feature is the gigantic notch at the top that houses the dual selfie camera and the earpiece. Looks like Google has taken into account the previous display problem of the Pixel 2 XL as they have made signifant improvement to the screen. In fact the Pixel 3 XL garnered an impressive A+ Rating by DisplayMate and now in good company of phones with the best screen out there.

Meanwhile, the standard sized Pixel 3 measures 5.5 inch with 18:9 aspect ratio OLED display. The resolution is 1,080 x 2,160 with a battey capacity of 2,915mAh. It is definitely a more compact form factor and is easier to use one handed, while the absense of unsightly notch makes it more appealing by default compared to its bigger sibling.
Now for their similarities. Both devices are powered by a Snapdragon 845 chipset. Unfortunately they could have future proof the RAM because theire is only 4GB. But the Pixel phones are running on a Vanilla Android, so performance should not be an issue anyway. A choice of 64 GB or 128 GB storage is also available.
The most impressive feature of the Pixel 3 is always been the camera. It remains a single camera module for the main camera but all the magic happens through the AI system which is nothing short of amazing. The well regarded HDR+ feature is better than even. At the demo, the camera was able to take bright pictures in low light without using flash, enhanced by AI.
Since there is no secondary telephoto lens to capture more detail when zoomed-in, the Super Res Zoom feature is also an AI that helps process more detail in order to compensate for the lack of specialized lens.
The camera also takes multiple shots and picks the best photo in order to make sure that the captured images are not blurry or someone in the group might have blinked, again also assisted by machine learning.
Selfie camera for the Pixel 3 and Pixel XL now comes with dual lens. Both have cameras have 8 MP sensors capable of taking normal and wide angle shots by sliding the controls.
This year’s Pixel comes with wireless charging support for both models.
Flip to Shh feature allows you to silence the device and turn off notification sound by flipping the phone face down.
The regular Pixel 3 will cost US $799 for the 64GB model while the larger XL variant’s price will begin at US $899. Both phones will be available initially at US on October 19 while Europe is slated for November 2 release date.
