Nokia 7.1 Plus blurs the line between midrange and flagship
Nokia X7 is now official in China, which is also be known as the Nokia 7.1 Plus elsewhere. It is the successor to the Nokia 7 Plus which was introduced as a near flagship mid-ranger back then. The X7 has seen quite an improvement over last year’s model and packs a wallop in its price range.
Powered by capable Snapdragon 710, the 6.18-inch device is going to narrow the performance gap between mid-range and premium device with AI and AR capability to boot. The notched display has also the same PureDisplay tech as that of the Nokia 7.1 which was also just recently unveiled. It means color accuracy and outdoor visibility is going to be among its strong suit. There is also an HDR support for video which can even convert SDR content.
Dual cameras are standard fare these days, as the Nokia 7.1 Plus is equipped with 12 MP Sony IMX363 sensor with f/1.8 aperture that allows more light to the lens. Secondary lens is 13MP and probably will be delegated for sensing depth to highlight subjects.
The presence of Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) is something we don’t see in this price segment – a welcome feature of the Nokia 7.1 Plus. The Zeiss-branded lens should make for a less blurry images and more sharper even in dim lit condition. Lurking along the notch is a 20MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture.
Under HMD, Nokia has adopted Android One program for their phones that guaranteed timely software support. The Nokia X7 aka 7.1 Plus will be running a vanilla Android 8.1 Oreo initially but will be updated to Android 9 Pie sooner.
There is an ample 3,500 mAh battery and can top up is no time with 18W fast charging capability. Unfortunately, there is no wireless charging but that is expected in this price.
Speaking of pricing, the Nokia X7 has a surprising price tag considering this is almost a high-end device. In China, where the phone is set to arrive next week, the base model (4GB RAM/64GB storage) will be sold at 1,699 yuan or roughly around $245. Of course after duties and taxes, it maybe priced higher in other territories but still, this is a very enticing proposition.
