Will your Galaxy S6 case fit the new Galaxy S7?
When we upgrade our phones to the latest model, we tend to left behind quite a collection of cases and accessories because we want to protect it against scratches, customize its look or just enhance how we use it. Since phone makers usually recycles same design language for their latest and greatest, wouldn’t it be nice if we could also keep the previous accessory and still use them? But unfortunately, that is not always the case.
At first glance, the Galaxy S7 is no different than its predecessor in terms of aesthetics. Both have the gorgeous metal frame with glass on the back. But upon closer inspection, there are indeed subtle differences in length, width and thickness that makes swapping between the two models not without compatibility issue. Not to mention, the S7 now comes with curved back for better ergonomics unlike the sharp corners of S6 that tends to dig in the hand. To get a clearer picture, below is a comparison of the two model’s dimension in millimeters.
Galaxy S6 | Galaxy S7 | |
---|---|---|
length | 143.4 mm | 142.4mm |
width | 70.5 mm | 69.6 mm |
thickness | 6.8 mm | 7.9mm |
As you can see, the Galaxy S7 is 1mm shorter, slightly narrower at 0.9 mm and thicker at 1.1 mm to accommodate the higher capacity battery. In addition, another key differentiator is that new Samsung GS7 incorporates a sloping edge on the back. Therefore your old Galaxy S6 case is not going to be a snug fit to the S7– or if at all due to the disparity in dimension.
