Samsung Galaxy M20: 5 Things to Know Before Buying
Finally, Samsung recognized that they can’t rely on brand recognition anymore when pricing their lower to mid-tier phones. With the release of budget friendly Samsung Galaxy M20, the Korean is trying to gain some lost ground in the affordable segment of the market that are currently dominated by Chinese OEMs. Xiaomi, Huawei and Oppo have set the standard when it comes to what your ~$200 can buy these days. On the other hand, At long last, Samsung came to grips that they can’t rest their laurels as market share are slowly being chipped away in favor of more feature-packed cost-friendly devices.
At around Php10,990, the mid-range Galaxy M20 is something of a long time coming for fans of Samsung. It is safe to say that it is hard not to consider for your next device if you are looking for a daily driver without breaking the bank. Having a huge 6.3 inch screen with full HD resolution, a modern aesthetics, a prominent but non-intrusive notch and pretty decent specs for its asking price, the Samsung M20 is a good contender for value-for-money smartphone.
There are obviously plenty of strong points especially in its price category. However, there are also few compromises in order to bring the cost down which is understandable. Here we highlighted the strength of the device and areas where they cut corners, though not exactly a deal breaker.
Samsung Galaxy M20, noteworthy features—pros and cons
1. Big, Full HD+ Screen
The thing that stands out if you look at the front of the Galaxy M20 is its massive 6.3 inch screen, with 1080 x 2340 pixels and has 409 ppi density. The design language has that modern appeal with minimal bezel and an “Infinity V” display or a fancy in-house term for a teardrop-shaped notch at the top. However, the screen is ‘only’ a TFT variety, not the AMOLED kind that Samsung is known for. Though many prefer the later, the Korean company really knows their display panel as the M20’s has a good color reproduction, good viewing angle and legible outdoor visibility.
2. Stamina champ with 5,000mAh battery
From a battery stand point, the Galaxy M20 is a winner. If you are looking for a smartphone that is all-day performer and can even eke out some juice till next day with a massive 5.000mAh battery, then this phone is an easy buy. The possible drawback of having that huge capacity is the long charging time. Luckily, it is compatible with fast charging so it will took less time in the power outlet to top up the battery than it normally would. Kudos to Samsung for bundling a 15W fast charger in the box so you don’t have to buy it separately, unlike other manufacturers.
3. Powered by the new Exynos 7904 Octa-core chipset
Under the hood, the Samsung M20 is powered by the company’s very own Exynos 7904 Octa-Core chipset. It is trying to compete with Qualcom’s mid-range chipset but Benchmark suggest it performs below the performance of Snapdragon 660. However, real world performance is not going to be an issue especially if you are not into latest games and likes to play in its highest settings.
4. Dual Cameras — been there, done that.. but
The Galaxy M20 is equipped with dual camera set-up at the rear, which is nothing new to be honest. It is composed of 13 MP, f/1.9 for its standard camera and a an ultra wide 5 MP, f/2.2 shooter for capturing more subject into the frame. Having a wide angle camera is not something you see in this price segment.
5. Priced just right
Lastly, the most exciting aspect of the Galaxy M20 is the price. It looks like Samsung finally caught up in the budget segment of the market by producing a phone that doesn’t feel like an entry level device with a mid-range price. It cost around Php10,990 or roughly equivalent to US $210, which makes it an irresistible deal for what it offers.
