iPad Air 2019 and iPad Mini 2019 are official
It turns out, the rumor of iPad Air and iPad MIni’s demise have been greatly exaggerated
Apple just announced a 2019 update to two of their tablets, both of which are presumed to be discontinued and even presumed dead. We are talking about the iPad Air which was scrapped two years ago and the iPad Mini that gets its last update way back 2015. Like a stealthy ninja in the middle of the night, Apple quietly launched a better, faster and improved iPad Air and iPad Mini, without much fanfare. The exterior though, it has the same look as before, only just like a vintage car with a souped-up engine.
The newest 10.5-inch iPad Air which is now in its third iteration and the fifth generation 7.9-inch iPad mini are identical in so many ways internally. Both tablets shares the same Apple’s in-house A12 Bionic chip with neural engine for machine learning. There is also support for the first generation Apple Pencil which costs $99. Another area that sees improvement is the screen which is now much better thanks to its True Tone Color support and are now laminated to the glass. In terms of photography, they both have the same 8MP main camera and 7 MP slefie camera.
The design of the iPad Air and iPad Mini are lifted from its predecessor that it is hard to distinguish them from models before them. The legacy design elements are still there like the Touch ID in time when Apple is doing away with them in favor of Face ID. There is also a lightning port instead of future-proof USB-C. At least the retention of 3.5mm headset jack is not much of a complain and the possibility of using your collection of old cases is nice. The iPad Air starts at $499 while the cheaper iPad Mini is priced at $399 and are available now in some territories.
