Questions about Nokia 3310 (2017) before you buy
Planning to get the new 3310? Here’s what you should know
The Nokia 3310 is the hottest feature phone in a while. While that is not saying much ( considering the form factor is now become a relic of the past), the 3310 is still quite attractive little device due to its novelty.
Moreover, the elder 3310 is simply is an iconic phone but even more legendary for its durability and battery stamina. In fact, the legacy device has become a launching pad for different memes that parodies its seemingly indestructible build quality.
With all the fanfare regarding its resurrection, one would be forgiven if this ‘dumb phone’ piqued one’s interest. But understandably, there are questions hanging around since this is a direct lineage to a device that when compared to today’s Android and iPhone is that it won’t stand a chance.
Truth be told, this wont replace as a preferred daily driver heavy smartphone user anytime soon. It is pretty clear that expectation needs to be tapered as to what it can and cannot do. But if you come for the excellent battery and standby time, you are in for a treat because of its little juice draining features. It is a phone that is going to relegated in the background, ready to whipped out once the primary phone’s battery conked out.
It is quite cheap and small but it is also important to really appreciate the reason for its existence in this day and age. That is to make calls and text just when you need it. Before you dip your toes, here are some few burning questions if you want to own this little endurance monster.
Can the new 3310 connect to the internet?
Just because it can surf the web using its built in opera browser doesn’t mean you should. It has woeful 2G connectivity which will be painfully slow to load much less view on a very small screen. There is no WIFI either so you have to rely on snail speed connectivity.
Is Facebook and other social media accessible?
You can access Facebook using Opera browser but that’s just that. Way back in its heyday, the Nokia’s feature phone is mainly for text and call, for the most part some things haven’t change. That said, if the painfully slow load times or bare bones experience did’t dissuade you, the navigation and typing should convince you that going online with the phone should be a one off experience. Only intrepid users or perhaps out of desperation we recommend to use it as such.
Is the case also customizable?
The original 3310 can be personalized to your hearts content with Xpress-On covers to suit your personality and mood. Replacing the front and back cover back then was fairly easily. Unfortunately with the refreshed 3310, the outer cover is not easy to replace without proper tools nor it is recommended. On a positive note, the battery is still user replaceable via removable back cover which is a good thing.
Can you take selfies?
Selfie camera is an essential feature of smartphone nowadays. That said, this is also where the price segment becomes too obvious with the new 3310 as it only has 2MP rear camera. Truth is, nobody is going to stop you to take self portrait shots using its only camera which is going to be hit or miss without the front viewfinder. The quality is not going make you ditch your iOS and Android phone camera either- not by a long shot. If in case you want to use this as an occasional shooter, might as well get a microSD card because the 16MB storage is going to take you nowhere.
Are downloadable apps and games available?
You can download games and apps in the store but the quality is very basic and there is nothing much to choose from. And oh, you can also play a revamped version of Snake. Move along.
Is it as durable as its predecessor?
The legacy 3310 is known for its durability become a veteran of many drop and torture tests, not to mention an internet meme icon for toughness. If this drop test video is any indication, the latest iteration seems to be quite as well-built.
Still a stamina champ, no question about that
With a claimed 30 day standby time the 3310 is going to take forever before it get another trip to the outlet for charging. Moreover, it is not only those who buys into nostalgia are the one who will buy this phone. As a secondary phone, it can be a backup for power hungry smartphone which has a habit of dying before the days end.
