Is the iPad 2 a Lost Cause Already?
One of the most endearing quality of an IOS devices is the software support even for the backward models. It is always updated to the latest software even older devices such as the iPad 2. But the last two major update hasn’t been very kind to the second generation iPad as it causes all sorts of problem particularly in the overall software experience. Among the major headache is the tremendous slowdown and bugginess just by navigating around the software.
With the latest IOS 8.1 update, you can’t help but notice the age of the iPad 2 by how slow and laggy the user experience has become. For someone holding on to their iPad 2 for as long as possible, it seems the worst thing you can do right now is to jump right into the latest software iteration. Reading IOS 8.1 user feedbacks, it seems to be a mixed bag because some say the update brings speed improvement on par with IOS 7.XX update. But unfortunately, my iPad 2 is on the short end of the supposed improvement. It is painfully slow and crashes is still prevalent along with nagging touchscreen issue.

Workaround for iPad 2 Update Lag
There is no denying the fact that there is only so much we can do with the outdated hardware of the iPad 2. Based on past experience, the solution that somehow works for the sluggishness that comes with the update is to turn off the iCloud services. It definitely defeats the purpose of having it, but sacrifices has to be made.
Another solution I have found on the web is to do a Reset Keyboard Dictionary when typing on Safari takes a long pause. In addition, to achieve the perception of speed, you can also turn on Reduce Motion to do away with animation and Parallax effect.
In the end, the iPad 2 is long in the tooth already and it shows. But whether you think it is time to move on to the latest tablet or phablet for that big screen fix, there are many irresistible choices right now. That $299 iPad mini retina sounds sweet, forget about the doodad fingerprint scanner.
