Some Asus ZenFone 3 Max 5.5″ have design flaw: Hairline crack appears at the bottom screw (updated)
A significant number of users are complaining about what seems to be a manufacturing defect regarding some unit of the 5.5 inch variant of ZenFone 3 Max. Forums and dedicated social media fan page are flooded with complaints regarding hairline crack found at the bottom of their device, just adjacent to where the screw is located.
The supposed design flaw affects many ZenFone 3 Max 5.5 inch users to which some are attributing the issue to tight bottom screws since small crack appears on that part. Some also claim that their device shows a crack though it is not even dropped and is inconspicuous enough that some actually didn’t notice it at all- only upon close inspection.
We don’t know how prevalent the issue is but according to Asus rep, they have already escalated the concern to the Taiwanese phone maker. Meanwhile, if you think you got a unit with defect, they encourage to have it checked at their service centers while the investigation is still ongoing. The most prudent thing to do as of now, if in case you are in the market for ZenFone 3 Max 5.5 is to look for the minute sign of fissure at the bottom since not all units are affected. So far, there is no indication that it affects the overall build quality as far as structural integrity of the handsets are concerned.
You may also check out images of the said defect here and here . There is also Facebook ZenFone 3 Max 5.5 group where you can view more images of affected units uploaded by members and discuss other topics about the device as well. In that page, most popular suggestion for a workaround is to loosen the screw a bit- but of course, you need a right tool to do it and not guaranteed to avoid further damage.
