Pixel 5 Allegedly Overheats When Recording 4K, 60fps Videos
With the Pixel 5, Google changes how it approach their top-tier phone by giving it a price that makes it relevant for the 2020’s consumer sentiment. However, in order to achieve a sweet price point, there are sacrifices to be made – controversially, the flagship processor was ditched in favor of a mid-range Snapdragon 765G. What remains intact though is the clean Android experience and unrivaled camera smarts.
The Pixel 5 is actually facing a strong competition in the $699 price point at least in the US, from the likes of Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and iPhone 12 Mini.
There are numerous reports from users and reviewers alike that some Pixel 5 units may have had some overheating issue. Some early adopters said the issue arise when taking video footage in its highest setting, which is at 4K, 60fps. We don’t known how prevalent the issue is since the Pixel 5 is yet to be released in many territories as of this writing. However, there are quite a handful of users who already voiced out their concerns in forums and social media such as from this Tweet below:
Tried recording a vlog on the #pixel5. It overheated 3x and on the 4th time, it told me “phone too hot, video quality may be effected”. No bueno. I’ve never had a phone overheat while recording 4k60 …

Over at Youtube, here is a comparison video wherein the Pixel 5’s camera start to act up when trying to capture a video while outdoor and under seemingly hot weather condition. At that time, recording is restricted by a grayed-out button along with a warning that indicates the phone is too hot.
Here is another online review that talks about similar experience while shooting video at highest quality. In the said clip, the overheating issue happened outdoor when the recording abruptly stopped, however he also mentioned that no such issue encountered again.
There is also discussion on Reddit regarding some owners who also experienced the same overheating problem wherein one user also tried to capture footage at 4K 60fps until the Pixel 5’s camera stopped working all of a sudden. A bit disconcerting though is that the phone is not exactly under hot condition according to the reddit user.
Another user said via Android Central Forum to which he claimed that he tried to use it in under favorable condition this time around. He boots the Pixel 5 in safe mode, then removed the case, with minimal screen brightness as possible. He said that the phone stopped recording in just 8 minutes even at a lower temperature setting of 20 degree Celsius.
There is no official word from Google yet regarding the “overheating” issue in the wake of screen gap complaints that surfaced beforehand, which is by the way now under investigation by the search giant.
