Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2: What’s New and Improved
The first generation of Samsung Galaxy Fold is off to a rocky start with units being plagued by durability and design issues. Though still in its nascency, the revolutionary folding phone really drew the attention of many simply because there isn’t anything like it on the market. The Galaxy Z Fold2 has been tweaked in the hardware side of things to make the phone/tablet hybrid the most compelling of its kind to date and a huge step in the right direction.
The Z Fold2’s displays, both on the front display and the main have seen a drastic improvement that really makes for a better overall experience. Let’s start with the front cover display, as the 6.23″ screen is almost borderless. It is now akin to a normal phone when folded, albeit taller and narrower. Compare that to the 2019 Galaxy Fold which has an awkward 4.6″ inch front display so definitely no contest there.
The highlight of the device is of course the near-iPad mini sized 7.6-inches main display and when unfolded, it becomes a tablet. The huge camera notch is now gone in favor of smaller punch-hole camera opening. There is also better screen-to-body ratio now with minimal bezels and it looks absolutely gorgeous with a fuller screen look. Just like the Note 20 Ultra, the Samsung Z Fold 2 also has a variable refresh rate, which can go as high as 120hz like when playing games but it can also go as low as 10Hz when viewing pictures or reading an e-book. The reason behind this is to limit power consumption that higher refresh rates are known for. Another carry-over feature is the “ultra thin glass” that was first introduced in the Galaxy Z Flip. It makes the screen a bit more durable than previous Fold which is made with a softer plastic.
It looks like a another area that Samsung spend a lot on R&D is on the hinge. It is crucial to nail it this time around since the user experience rests in the folding action. That said, the viewing angles it can now fold is adjustable and now it can stand like a laptop from 75 degrees up to 115 degrees with flex mode, thus allows to have a different form factor depending on how you intend to use it. There are apps that takes advantage of the flex mode like Youtube, Gallery, Camera and Duo so you can do separate things on the other half of the screen. There is also a self cleaning micro brushes on the hinge that repels dust and debris from going inside.
The Z Fold 2 has also utilized the cameras in a smart way that it gives more setups to capture photo. For example, if you want to take selfies, you can do so using the camera on the punch hole of the main display. There’s is also option for more high quality self-portrait shots using the much capable main camera at the back and use the front display as a viewfinder. You can also stand the phone using the 90 degree fold and use the timer to take a more stable photo. Also while folded, the you can capture a photo and view the images instantly at the same time.
Those are just a few meaningful changes of the Galaxy Z Fold2 and it seems Samsung has done a really great job to polish this innovative device. Though there are still few niggles though like lack of IP rating, some lingering durability issues, and of course the price tag.
