Rumor: iPad Mini will be discontinued due to waning consumer interest
It seems the tablet market has reached a plateau and is in decline as sales plummet due to decreasing demand from consumers. Apple, being the biggest market share holder of tablet, seemingly acknowledged the downward trend during their last iPad event by releasing a more affordable 9.7 iPad (2017) to make it more palatable for consumers.
But what is conspicuous is the absence of the latest iteration of the iPad mini which has been last updated in 2015 with the release of iPad Mini 4. According to tech website BGR, their source suggested that Apple’s small tablet is going to be phased out because of an obvious sign that sales are losing steam. The site also relayed that it is “very clear” that the iPad Mini is not delivering for Apple in terms of sales.
For many, the iPad Mini is a sweet spot for a tablet as it is light and easier to carry around compared to its 9.7 inch sibling. That is until the arrival of 5.5 inch iPhone which some may find the screen is big enough to forgo owning a 7.9 inch iPad. In addition, the iPhone 7 Plus is considerably pocket-able with better camera which simply negates the reason of having a mid-sized tablet.
For the meantime, there is no official confirmation or denial regarding the report of iPad Mini’s impending demise. Currently, the available iPad Mini 4 is a 128GB variant which cost around $399 for WIFI only and an LTE+WIFI model for $529.
