Design – in full metal glory
In terms of design, you can argue that both device has its own merit. They have adapted a metal exterior that creates a premium looking aesthetics. The Galaxy J7 Pro is one gorgeous looking device with minimal bezels on the side and a front mounted fingerprint sensor at the bottom. It has a flat camera module at the back which is nice detail of the phone. While antennae bands are common sight and can be an eyesore, in J7 Pro it doesn’t interfere to the flow of the design, in fact you can argue that it enhances it.
The LG Q6 has the 7000-series aluminum construction for its frame which is the same type of material used to fortify the iPhone 7. The minimal bezel is stunning to look at and enhanced by 2 is to 1 aspect ratio first seen on the LG G6- which yields a much higher 78.0% screen-to-body ratio compared to 73.3% found on the Galaxy J7 Pro.
Screen quality also has some noticeable difference mainly being the Super AMOLED panel fitted in Samsung J7 Pro that produces punchy and highly saturated colors with deep blacks.
Undeniably Mid range processors
Both devices are powered by a mid processor. On paper, the higher overclocked processor on the J7 Pro using its in house Exynos CPU will slightly give it edge in performance, but sometimes real world use may or may not oblige. Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 chipset on the LG Q6 should also satisfy average users as long as they don’t delve with highest setting 3D games that will push it to its limit.
Cameras- it is not just about megapixels
Though there are 13 MP main shooters found on each devices, perusing the camera spec sheet will reveal that one is better than the other in certain condition. The wider the aperture, is going to be better in taking low light images and that is where the Galaxy J7 Pro has the advantage over the LG Q6. The f/1.7 aperture on the Samsung’s mid range will have better clarity and detail even in less than ideal lighting condition. It is also the same aperture found on its flagship device which is impressive that Samsung fitted the same with its mid range offering. Meanwhile, the LG Q6 has f/2.2 aperture for its cameras but fortunately there is LED flash to help compensate with dimly lit environment. For the selfie/ front camera, the J7 Pro has a higher 13 MP resolution but the LG Q6, though has only 5 MP is capable of taking wide angle self portraits.
Battery, bio-metrics, Android version
The 3600 mAh battery found on the J7 Pro is quite a substantial difference compared to the 3,000 mAh on the LG Q6. Meanwhile, the lack of fingerprint sensor of the latter is quite disappointing casualty of cost cutting measure, but at least they make up for a facial recognition feature to unlock the device. Front mounted fingerprint sensor is situated conveniently for the Galaxy J7 Pro.
Both comes with Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box on top of proprietary overlay to add manufacturer’s flavor to the UI experience. The J7 Pro utilize the same UI found on the Galaxy S8 with always-on-display feature in tow. Meanwhile, the LG Q6 also adapted the up to date overlay of its flagship counterpart.
Pricing and Availability
The Galaxy J7 Pro is now available in different territories in Asia but for those in the US, it is now available via Amazon store at around $319. Meanwhile, as of this writing, the LG Q6 is still about to land in key markets but it has already landed in some territory and surprisingly is moderately priced.
Takeaway
Both devices are contender as a solid and capable mid ranger but which one has the overall advantage? If you are willing to spend a little more, then the Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro appears to have the upper hand overall with good cameras, beefier processor, premium build quality and Super AMOLED Screen . Meanwhile, the LG Q6 has a 2:1 aspect ratio which is currently available on flagship devices and a tougher frame. Though it may appear that Samsung J7 Pro comes on top when compared to the LG Q6, but do consider that the latter is also the slightly more cheaper between the two 5.5 inch devices
