Google unveils new Pixel Phones: Specs | Price| Release Date
Say goodbye to Nexus brand and say hello to Pixel phones. Google unveils its latest and greatest mobile phone powered by its most up-to-date Android version which is 7.1 at the moment. It also marks the end of Nexus phones but also welcomes the beginning of a more in-house approach to their very own phones.
There are two variants released, the more palm friendly 5 inch Pixel and the 5.5 inch phablet Pixel XL. Apart from the screen size, resolution and battery capacity, both shares identical innards so performance-wise there should be parity between the two.
Pixel phones are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 with 4GB of RAM. Based on early hand-ons impression, the performance is indeed very snappy which not surprising really. The legacy Nexus line is known for their smooth user experience with less bloat as it runs on pure Android and it continues with the Pixel phones.
Google is also proud of what they have done in terms of the camera. The California based company say that its 12.3MP camera gets the highest rating from none other than DxOMark mobile photography test. Other camera specs include 1.55µm pixels, f/2.0 aperture and an Electronic Image Stabilization. It also comes with unlimited storage for pictures using Google Photos regardless of resolution.
In terms of design, this is as premium as it get with glass-aluminum construction. The profile is a bit top-heavy design with slightly thicker up top compared to the slightly thinner bottom. The advantage is there is no camera hump which can be annoying feature in many smartphones today as it can break the flow of design. The phones are available in colors with interesting name such as Quite Black, Very Silver and Really Blue.
Past Nexus phones are known for their reasonable pricing but this time Google didn’t hold back pricing with their premium phones. The out of the pocket price starts at $649 for the 5 inch with 32GB storage and can go as high as $869 for the 5.5 Pixel XL with 128GB. The phones are available for preorder online via madeby.google.com if you are in the US and from there you can get it from either Verizon, BestBuy or Google store.
Update: It is confirmed that the Pixel and Pixel XL got IP53 certification. It is in the lower spectrum of dust and water resistance rating and not recommended to dunk it in water.
