Facebook Intros Messenger Lite for Emerging Markets
Facebook announced a faster and much slender version of their popular messaging app. The aptly named Messenger Lite is primarily catered for emerging markets where there is slow internet connectivity. In addition, full version of the said Facebook app is known to hog a sizable amount of storage which doesn’t bode well for an entry level Android smartphones with limited storage. Messenger typically consumes more than 200MB of internal storage but the ‘Lite’ version is just around 10MB so it might ease some installation and allocation problem.
Though it significantly shed some weight, expect to retain some core functionalities so it doesn’t necessarily impact basic user experience. You can send text messages, send or receive images and access to stickers as you would on the normal app. It is probable that voice call is not available in the Lite version due to its frugal nature. The app is also less taxing to the phone’s resources so it can be launched even faster than its heavyweight counterpart.
You can distinguish the Lite version by the color of its logo. It now takes the blue lightning with a white speech bubble for the background which is the reverse of the original app. It is now available in limited countries at the moment such as Malaysia, Tunisia and Sri Lanka. Meanwhile other territories like the Philippines is expected to follow suit.
