A must-have tough case? – Spigen Tough Armor for Samsung Galaxy A53
The practicality of using a case for a phone is already common knowledge; we buy a new phone, and we pair it with a compatible case (or cases). As an owner of Samsung Galaxy A53, I bought and tested multiple cases to protect my device and ensure it will still be okay even when it gets dropped after you unintentionally lose your grip.
I chose a diverse lineup of cases for my Galaxy A53, ranging from the slim Spigen Rugged Armor to the exceptionally tough yet bulky Unicorn Beetle Pro. For the most part, you don’t get the actual feel of a case, unless you get to subject them to your regular routine, be it for work or recreational activity.
While I really like minimalist slim cases in general, it turns out it doesn’t really inspire confidence due to their form factor. Also, a minimally constructed clear case can turn yellow in just a short time. For those who have an active lifestyle, a slim case is the last thing that comes to mind when it comes to a protective case that can keep up.
On the other side of the spectrum, heavy-duty tough cases may feel unnecessarily too bulky to handle for some. In addition, there are tough cases that are not exactly the easiest to install because of their multi-layer components.
I think it is ideal to have a variety of cases suitable for a multifaceted lifestyle. However, it appears most smartphone users only resort to using just one case for their device. That said if you are going for a case that can cover all the bases, meaning it can thoroughly protect from drops and nicks, a certain Spigen case should do the trick.
Spigen Tough Armor – A decent set of protective features
I don’t agree with one size fits all when it comes to cases. However, having tested numerous cases for the Samsung A53, I actually have a default case, which I return to after I swap it for a bit of variety. That case is the Spigen Tough Armor for my Galaxy A53. It is not a perfect case by any stretch of the imagination, but it is that case that pretty much stays on my phone.

Dual Layer Design with foam padding
It is common to see a “tough” case that comes with a dual-layer approach to keep the phone well-guarded from drops and scratches. The Spigen Tough Armor case has not only two-piece materials in its arsenal, but it also comes with a foam layer that dissipates the energy of an impact. Definitely, no reason to intentionally drop a good phone. However, having an armor-like covering with an integrated shock-absorbing foam seems like a good definition of what an incredibly shock-resistant case should be like.
It adds bulk to the phone but compared to, let’s say the Unicorn Beetle Pro or the Poetic Revolution, it has a more manageable design in terms of added heft. Also compared to those two popular rugged cases, the Spigen Tough Armor is much easier to put on the phone since you don’t need to disassemble the case – just slide the phone in, almost with ease just like an ordinary single-piece case does.
One thing I really like about this case is that I didn’t encounter a user experience issue. Some tough cases tend to get in the way when you swipe or scroll from the edges due to their aggressively tall bezels. Though aggressive front lip may deter damage better, that is a case of diminishing return when some basic functions are affected.
If we are going to nitpick this case, I think the built-in kickstand needs refinement. It feels flimsy and allows only limited landscape orientation. Since taking portrait footage and video chatting are a thing nowadays, it would be nice if you can prop up the phone with a more flexible kickstand.
Final thoughts
Do we recommend the Spigen Tough Armor for Samsung Galaxy A53? The short answer is yes. However, like everything else, your mileage may vary. The plane jane design, which will appeal to others, might not be some phone owners’ cup of tea. All in all, it is a terrific case that looks like can handle what day-to-day living can throw at it and priced competitively as well.
