Will Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ case fit the Galaxy S8/S8+ case?
The Galaxy S9 is the latest premium device from Samsung which looks quite identical to its predecessor, the Galaxy S8. In fact, if you are going to put them side by side, it seems there is little changed on the front and seemingly share the same dimensions— that is if you haven’t read their spec sheets. Both devices are dominated by near bezel-less infinity display which makes it a more manageable to in spite of its big screen by utilizing a tall rather than wide aspect ratio. There are colors scheme that are unique to the S9 which set it apart from its predecessor. The most glaring difference can be found at the rear, a more ergonomically located fingerprint sensor this time around.
Coincidentally, if you own previous Galaxy S8 and invested quite a few cases and covers — and now ready to jump ship to the new Galaxy S9, the question you might ask is whether you can use your old S8 cases with the new S9. The short answer is definitely NO.
Dimensions
- Galaxy S9 – 147.7 mm x 68.7 mm x 8.5 mm
- Galaxy S8 – 148.9 mmx 68.1 mm x 8 mm
As you can see in the size comparison, there are already a subtle differences in their dimension. The Galaxy S9 is 1.2 mm shorter than S8, also .5 mm thicker and at .6 mm wider than its predecessor. Therefore, it is already clear with these comparisons that hand-me-down cases is a no go. But wait, there is more…
A key differentiator
Flip both devices on their rear and you will see a stark difference. This time around, gone is the abysmal fingerprint reader of the Galaxy S8 which has seen a change for the better in the S9. It is now vertically positioned with the camera which makes it more sensible, as it is much easier to reach. That said, any attempt to use the old case is just impossible at this point.
Case in Point
There is no point in insisting of using your old Galaxy S8 (or S8+) cases to your latest Galaxy S9 (or S9 +), because they aren’t just compatible. A premium phone needs to be protected because they are quite expensive, and here are some considerably cheap cases to consider.
